Recent changes

• If your wiki uses markup like <div class="mw-content-ltr"> or <div class="mw-content-rtl"> without the required dir attribute, then these will no longer work in 2 weeks. There is a short-term fix that can be added to your local wiki's Common.css page, which is explained at T287701. From now on, all usages should include the full attributes, for example: <div class="mw-content-ltr" dir="ltr" lang="en"> or <div class="mw-content-rtl" dir="rtl" lang="he">. This also applies to some other HTML tags, such as span or code. You can find existing examples on your wiki that need to be updated, using the instructions at T287701.
• Reminder: Wikimedia has migrated to the Libera Chat IRC network, from the old Freenode network. Local documentation should be updated.

Problems

• Last week, all wikis had slow access or no access for 30 minutes. There was a problem with generating dynamic lists of articles on the Russian Wikinews, due to the bulk import of 200,000+ new articles over 3 days, which led to database problems. The problematic feature has been disabled on that wiki and developers are discussing if it can be fixed properly. [1][2]

Changes later this week

• When adding links to a page using VisualEditor or the 2017 wikitext editor, disambiguation pages will now only appear at the bottom of search results. This is because users do not often want to link to disambiguation pages. [3]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 August. It will be on all wikis from 5 August (calendar).

Future changes

• The team of the Wikipedia app for Android is working on communication in the app. The developers are working on how to talk to other editors and get notifications. You can read more. They are looking for users who want to test the plans. Any editor who has an Android phone and is willing to download the app can do this.
• The Beta Feature for Công cụ thảo luận will be updated in the coming weeks. You will be able to subscribe to individual sections on a talk page at more wikis. You can test this now by adding ?dtenable=1 to the end of the talk page's URL (example).

Problems

• You can read but not edit 17 wikis for a few minutes on 10 August. This is planned at 05:00 UTC. This is because of work on the database. [4]

Changes later this week

• The Wikimania Hackathon will take place remotely on 13 August, starting at 5:00 UTC, for 24 hours. You can participate in many ways. You can still propose projects and sessions.
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 August. It will be on all wikis from 12 August (calendar).
• The old CSS <div class="visualClear"></div> will not be supported after 12 August. Instead, templates and pages should use <div style="clear:both;"></div>. Please help to replace any existing uses on your wiki. There are global-search links available at T287962.

Future changes

• The Wikipedia Library is a place for Wikipedia editors to get access to sources. There is an extension which has a new function to tell users when they can take part in it. It will use notifications. It will start pinging the first users in September. It will ping more users later. [5]
• Vue.js will be the JavaScript framework for MediaWiki in the future. [6]

Recent changes

• You can add language links in the sidebar in the new Vector skin again. You do this by connecting the page to a Wikidata item. The new Vector skin has moved the language links but the new language selector cannot add language links yet. [7]

Problems

• There was a problem on wikis which use the Translate extension. Translations were not updated or were replaced with the English text. The problems have been fixed. [8][9][10]

Tôi đã dành ra một chút thời gian để gắn biển gần như tất cả những tiêu đề trang sai, sang nhờ Meta xoá nhưng lúc đó tôi đang cách ly acc chính nên sử dụng 1 acc phụ nhưng do mới lập lại thực hiện quá nhiều edits trong thời gian ngắn nên họ chỉ xoá những cat trống còn trang đổi hướng thì họ không xoá (cậy quyền vô lý). Phản đối

1.  Phản đối Trong lần tựu nhiệm trước, bạn chỉ có 35 tác vụ bảo quản và 17 sửa đổi. Tôi không nghĩ dự án này cần một bảo quản viên cảnh lấy việc đi nhặt mũ làm trò vui. Nếu chỉ để dọn dẹp trang rác thôi, thì tôi nhờ bảo quản viên toàn cục bên meta cũng được. Bạn đang đóng góp chính cho Wikibooks, nên tập trung lo việc ở đó hơn.    Tôi không bác bỏ gì về sự phản đối của bạn NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh. Tuy nhiên có vài điều cần được làm rõ cho bạn và cho cả người khác biết.

   Thứ nhất, không như Wikipedia thì Wikiquote là một dự án không có lấy một bảo quản viên, ít nội dung và cũng chẳng mấy ai đóng góp. Việc bạn nói tôi là bảo quản viên cảnh, ít nhất bạn phải chỉ ra một bảo quản viên khác tích cực hơn tôi gấp trăm lần (đương nhiên bạn không làm được vì ngoài tôi ra chẳng có ai khác) hoặc chỉ ra khối lượng công việc bảo quản tôi cần làm nhiều hơn trăm lần những gì thực tế tôi làm.

   Thứ hai, bạn cho rằng nhờ bảo quản viên bên Meta "cũng được" hơn việc bầu lên một Bảo quản viên như tôi. Nếu nhờ mấy tay bảo quản viên đó mà dễ dàng, tiện lợi, vui vẻ, nhanh chóng thì lần trước tôi cũng chẳng tự ra ứng cử BQV làm gì.

   Thứ ba, theo ý bạn, tôi phải sửa đổi nhiều lên đúng không? Tôi đâu có như bạn, cứ bấm vào nút sửa đổi, làm một cái gì đó rồi lưu lại đâu. Về cơ bản lúc đó tôi chưa hiểu rõ bản chất đóng góp của Wikiquote là gì, cho nên không sửa đổi nhiều, cũng như không có ý tưởng gì để sửa đổi.

   Thư tư, nếu chưa hiểu rõ thì phải tìm hiểu Wikiquote là gì. Không như Wikipedia thế hệ sau được ngay thế hệ trước hướng dẫn, lúc bấy giờ Wikiquote chẳng còn ai để nói cho tôi tường tận về dự án này cả. Tôi cũng gặp trường hợp tương tự như lúc mới bước vào Wikibooks. Tôi phải dành rất rất nhiều thời gian và công sức tìm hiểu và nghiên cứu Wikibooks mới hiểu được mình phải làm gì ở cái website này. Nhưng lần ấy vì tốn quá nhiều công sức nên tôi lại lười dành thêm thời gian và công sức một lần nữa cho Wikiquote.

   Thứ năm, tại nhiệm kỳ trước, tôi chỉ giữ chức có 3 tháng, nó hết rất nhanh. Tôi nhậm chức vào tháng 1, đến tháng 2 thì tôi dành thời gian ăn Tết, tháng 3 thì tôi bận đến cả Wikibooks cũng không động tới, tháng 4 thì hết quyền, đã xin người ta gia hạn thêm quyền nhưng không cho, định làm thêm biểu quyết nhưng tháng 4 thì tôi cũng bận nốt, đến cả Wikibooks cũng không có sửa đổi nào.

   Cái này không phải thanh minh để bạn đổi lá phiếu mà cái này để làm rõ hơn sự việc.

   @NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh: Bạn Danh cũng không nên quá gắt gao như vậy. Tôi thấy dự án có bảo quản viên thường trực vẫn tốt hơn là nhờ vả các tiếp viên ở Meta.    ...còn tôi thì cho là một dự án không có người đóng góp thường xuyên thì cũng không cần có một bảo quản viên (rất) ít hoạt động làm gì cả.

   Bảo quản viên toàn cục (không phải tiếp viên) và nhóm Tuần tra wiki nhỏ sẽ lo việc lùi sửa hoặc xoá trang phá hoại.

 Phản đối Với những gì thành viên này làm thì chưa cần quyền BQV. Tôi tranh luận thấy thành viên này chỉ thích ngược dòng thôi, chứ kiến thức hổng nhiều. Ngoài ra, tôi có ấn tượng xấu với thành viên này về vấn đề "trách nhiệm", còn nhớ, anh ta từng bê nguyên một bài chép 100% từ Google dịch để ứng cử BVCL, báo hại cả cộng đồng lao vào sửa từng chữ một. @NhacNy2412: Thành viên Jurchen Racing Boy mở tài khoản được 4 phút thì bỏ phiếu. Kết hợp với việc bị cấm ở Wikipedia do dùng rối, vi phạm thái độ văn minh, có tiền sử tấn công ứng cử viên tại Wikipedia ngay trước khi bỏ phiếu. Hơn nữa theo lời bạn nói là các dự án không liên quan đến nhau, thành viên này viện dẫn lý do từ Wikipedia, bạn tính thế nào. Kết luận: phiếu của thành viên này không đáng tin cậy. Alphama đã xóa thảo luận này của Đ*t c*n m Đức Anh vì cho rằng nó mang tính chất diễn đàn. Việc xóa bỏ đã diễn ra vào lúc Bạn không ghi lại thời gian xóa bằng năm dấu ~ (~~~~~). @Mạnh An: Nói thật với bạn là cái biểu quyết BQVGD bên viwikibooks là tôi tạo ra tiền lệ đầu tiên, chứ cái quyền BQVGD thường đi kèm với BQV nếu yêu cầu. Hành chính viên sẽ lựa chọn bảo quản viên giao diện dựa trên đánh giá chung của bản thân/nhóm hành chính viên, và chỉ trao quyền đó cho những người đã có quyền bảo quản viên + xác thực hai yếu tố để đảm bảo an toàn. Vì vậy, nói chung, việc "xin" quyền bảo quản viên giao diện phụ thuộc vào hành chính viên, và khi không có hành chính viên thì là vào cộng đồng. Tuy nhiên đấy là nói về bảo quản viên đã giữ quyền được một thời gian sau đó xin thêm quyền bảo quản giao diện. Tôi đang nói về những người chưa phải bảo quản viên, bằng biểu quyết bảo quản viên để xin tổ hợp 2 quyền hạn. Tiền lệ này xuất hiện không hiếm, ở viwikibooks có tiền lệ là Thienhau2003. Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee ending 14 September 2021

Movement Strategy announces the Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee. The Call opens August 2, 2021 and closes September 14, 2021.

The Committee is expected to represent diversity in the Movement. Diversity includes gender, language, geography, and experience. This comprises participation in projects, affiliates, and the Wikimedia Foundation.

English fluency is not required to become a member. If needed, translation and interpretation support is provided. Members will receive an allowance to offset participation costs. It is US$100 every two months.

We are looking for people who have some of the following skills:

• Know how to write collaboratively. (demonstrated experience is a plus)
• Are ready to find compromises.
• Focus on inclusion and diversity.
• Have knowledge of community consultations.
• Have intercultural communication experience.
• Have governance or organization experience in non-profits or communities.
• Have experience negotiating with different parties.

The Committee is expected to start with 15 people. If there are 20 or more candidates, a mixed election and selection process will happen. If there are 19 or fewer candidates, then the process of selection without election takes place.

The committee will consist of 15 members in total: The online communities vote for 7 members, 6 members will be selected by the Wikimedia affiliates through a parallel process, and 2 members will be appointed by the Wikimedia Foundation. The plan is to assemble the committee by November 1, 2021.

The Board of Trustees is preparing a call for feedback about the upcoming Board Elections, from January 7 - February 10, 2022.

While details will be finalized the week before the call, we have confirmed at least two questions that will be asked during this call for feedback:

• What is the best way to ensure fair representation of emerging communities among the Board?

• What involvement should candidates have during the election?

While additional questions may be added, the Movement Strategy and Governance team wants to provide time for community members and affiliates to consider and prepare ideas on the confirmed questions before the call opens. We apologize for not having a complete list of questions at this time. The list of questions should only grow by one or two questions. The intention is to not overwhelm the community with requests, but provide notice and welcome feedback on these important questions.

Recent changes

• A oauth_consumer variable has been added to the AbuseFilter to enable identifying changes made by specific tools. [48]
• Gadgets are now able to directly include JSON pages. This means some gadgets can now be configured by administrators without needing the interface administrator permission, such as with the Geonotice gadget. [49]
• Gadgets can now specify page actions on which they are available. For example, |actions=edit,history will load a gadget only while editing and on history pages. [50]
• Gadgets can now be loaded on demand with the withgadget URL parameter. This can be used to replace an earlier snippet that typically looks like withJS or withCSS. [51]
• At wikis where the Mentorship system is configured, you can now use the Action API to get a list of a mentor's mentees. [52]

The Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections is now open and will close on 7 February 2022.

With this Call for Feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team is taking a different approach. This approach incorporates community feedback from 2021. Instead of leading with proposals, the Call is framed around key questions from the Board of Trustees. The key questions came from the feedback about the 2021 Board of Trustees election. The intention is to inspire collective conversation and collaborative proposal development about these key questions.

There are two confirmed questions that will be asked during this Call for Feedback:

1. What is the best way to ensure more diverse representation among elected candidates? The Board of Trustees noted the importance of selecting candidates who represent the full diversity of the Wikimedia movement. The current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Europe.
2. What are the expectations for the candidates during the election? Board candidates have traditionally completed applications and answered community questions. How can an election provide appropriate insight into candidates while also appreciating candidates’ status as volunteers?

There is one additional question that may be presented during the Call about selection processes. This question is still under discussion, but the Board wanted to give insight into the confirmed questions as soon as possible. Hopefully if an additional question is going to be asked, it will be ready during the first week of the Call for Feedback.

Additional question to the Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees elections

Dear ESEAP project communities,

I am reaching out to you today about an additional question to the Call for Feedback about Board of Trustees elections that I posted above. The Board has approved an additional question which we seek feedback to:

How should affiliates participate in the elections? Affiliates are an important part of the Wikimedia movement. Two seats of the Board of Trustees due to be filled this year were filled in 2019 through the Affiliate-selected Board seats process. A change in the Bylaws removed the distinction between community and affiliate seats. This leaves the important question: How should affiliates be involved in the selection of new seats?

The Board of Trustees is seeking feedback about this last question especially, although not solely, from the affiliate community. Everyone is invited to share proposals and join the conversation in the Call for Feedback channels. In addition to collecting online feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team will organize several video calls with affiliate members to collect feedback. These calls will be at different times and include Trustees.

Hello everyone,

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees released a statement on the ratification process for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) Enforcement Guidelines.

The Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) provides a baseline of acceptable behavior for the entire movement. The UCoC and the Enforcement Guidelines were written by volunteer-staff drafting committees following community consultations.

The revised guidelines were published 24 January 2022 as a proposed way to apply the policy across the movement. There is a list of changes made to the guidelines after the enforcement draft guidelines review. Comments about the guidelines can be shared on the Enforcement Guidelines talk page on Meta-wiki.

To help to understand the guidelines and process, the Movement Strategy and Governance (MSG) team will be hosting Conversation Hours on 4 February 2022 at 15:00 UTC, 25 February 2022 at 12:00 UTC, and 4 March 2022 at 15:00 UTC. Join the conversation hours to speak with the UCoC project team and drafting committee members about the updated guidelines and voting process.

The timeline is available on Meta-wiki. The voting period is March 7 to 21. All eligible voters will have an opportunity to support or oppose the adoption of the Enforcement guidelines, and share why. See the voting information page for more details.

Many participants from across the movement have provided valuable input in these ongoing conversations. The UCoC and MSG teams want to thank the Drafting Committee and the community members for their contributions to this process.

The Movement Strategy and Governance team of the Wikimedia Foundation would like to invite you to the next event about "Regional and Thematic Hubs". The Wikimedia Movement is in the process of understanding what Regional and Thematic Hubs should be. Our workshop in November was a good start (read the report), but we're not finished yet.

Over the last weeks we conducted about 16 interviews with groups working on establishing a Hub in their context (see Hubs Dialogue). These interviews informed a report that will serve as a foundation for discussion on March 12. The report is planned to be published on March 9.

The event will take place on March 12, 13:00 to 16:00 UTC on Zoom. Interpretation will be provided in French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, and Portuguese. • On selected wikis, 50% of logged-in users will see the new table of contents. When scrolling up and down the page, the table of contents will stay in the same place on the screen. This is part of the Desktop Improvements project. [89]
• Message boxes produced by MediaWiki code will no longer have these CSS classes: successbox, errorbox, warningbox. The styles for those classes and messagebox will be removed from MediaWiki core. This only affects wikis that use these classes in wikitext, or change their appearance within site-wide CSS. Please review any local usage and definitions for these classes you may have. This was previously announced in the 28 February issue of Tech News.

The Community Affairs Committee of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees would like to thank everyone who participated in the recently concluded community vote on the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC).

The volunteer scrutinizing group has completed the review of the accuracy of the vote and has reported the total number of votes received as 2,283. Out of the 2,283 votes received, a total of 1,338 (58.6%) community members voted for the enforcement guidelines, and a total of 945 (41.4%) community members voted against it. In addition, 658 participants left comments with 77% of the comments written in English.

We recognize and appreciate the passion and commitment that community members have demonstrated in creating a safe and welcoming culture that stops hostile and toxic behavior, supports people targeted by such behavior, and encourages good faith people to be productive on the Wikimedia projects.

Even at this incomplete stage, this is evident in the comments received. While the Enforcement Guidelines did reach a threshold of support necessary for the Board to review, we encouraged voters, regardless of which way they were voting, to provide feedback on the elements of the enforcement guidelines that they felt needed to be changed or fixed, as well as why, in case it seemed advisable to launch a further round of edits that would address community concerns.

Foundation staff who have been reviewing comments have advised us of some of the emerging themes, and as a result we have decided as Community Affairs Committee to ask the Foundation to reconvene the drafting committee and to undertake another community engagement to refine the enforcement guidelines based on the community feedback received from the recently concluded vote.

For clarity, this feedback has been clustered into 4 sections as follows:

1. To identify the type, purpose, and applicability of the training;
2. To simplify the language for easier translation and comprehension by non-experts;
3. To explore the concept of affirmation, including its pros and cons;
4. To review the conflicting roles of privacy/victim protection and right to be heard.

Other issues may emerge during conversations, and particularly as the draft Enforcement Guidelines evolve, but we see these as the primary areas of concern for voters and are asking staff to facilitate review of these issues. After further engagement, the Foundation should re-run the community vote to evaluate the revamped Enforcement Outline to see if the new document is then ready for its official ratification.

Further, we are aware of the concerns with the note 3.1 in the Universal Code of Conduct Policy. We are directing the Foundation to facilitate a review of this language to ensure that the Policy meets its intended purposes of supporting a safe and inclusive community, without waiting for the planned review of the entire Policy at the end of year.

Again, we thank all who participated, thinking about these critical and difficult challenges and contributing to better approaches across the movement to working together well.

Call for volunteers: 2022 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election

<languages/> The Movement Strategy and Governance team is looking for community members to serve as election volunteers in the upcoming Board of Trustees election.

The idea of the Election Volunteer Program came up during the 2021 Wikimedia Board of Trustees Election. This program turned out to be successful. With the help of Election Volunteers we were able to increase outreach and participation in the election by 1,753 voters over 2017. Overall turnout was 10.13%, 1.1 percentage points more, and 214 wikis were represented in the election.

But a total of 74 wikis that did not participate in 2017 produced voters in the 2021 election. Can you help change the participation?

Election volunteers will help in the following areas:

• Translate short messages and announce the ongoing election process in community channels
• Optional: Monitor community channels for community comments and questions

Volunteers should:

• Maintain the friendly space policy during conversations and events
• Present the guidelines and voting information to the community in a neutral manner

Updates on the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Guidelines

I’d like to share an update on the work on the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC):

• (see full announcement) In May 2022, the UCoC project team completed a report on the 2022 March ratification vote about the Guidelines. Voters cast votes from at least 137 communities, and at least 650 voters added comments with their vote. The report is available on Meta-Wiki.
• Following the vote, the Community Affairs Committee (CAC) of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees asked that several areas of the Guidelines be reviewed for improvements. A Revisions Committee will refine it based on community feedback.

Recent changes

• In the Vector 2022 skin, the page title is now displayed above the tabs such as Discussion, Read, Edit, View history, or More. Learn more. [133]
• It is now possible to easily view most of the configuration settings that apply to just one wiki, and to compare settings between two wikis if those settings are different. For example: Japanese Wiktionary settings, or settings that are different between the Spanish and Esperanto Wikipedias. Local communities may want to discuss and propose changes to their local settings. Details about each of the named settings can be found by searching MediaWiki.org. [134]
• The Anti-Harassment Tools team recently deployed the IP Info Feature as a Beta Feature at all wikis. This feature allows abuse fighters to access information about IP addresses. Please check our update on how to find and use the tool. Please share your feedback using a link you will be given within the tool itself.
